BRYNHILDR

The first time I read Volsungasaga, I thought Brynhild was boring, a damsel in distress with a contradictory backstory.  When I reread it, this time a translation by Jackson Crawford, I got a sense of hidden depths.  The Norse Sagas are laconic in style, they spend very little time on characters' inner lives, letting their actions speak for themselves.  Much like reading a script for a play, the emotion is implied.  I wanted to try to capture that subtextual emotion and drama by illustrating the scenes that have very little action, but a great deal of feeling.  In particular, I wanted to give Brynhildr a fair shake.
